WHISPERS ON THE WEB, Our monthly newsletter

We are fortunate to have some very talented people writing and editing. We still need regular reminders about once a week to keep the members going to the site to read, and yet, the ones that do are telling us how much good they get out of the articles, and the fun of reading the other members thoughts in Speaking Out.

If you come up with an article or an idea, write to us at editor@webwhispers.org. Donna McGary and Jack Henslee are both looking for new writers or subjects. Our Kim Almand is always interested in more ideas for and articles from professionals.

We also have a good index of each month’s articles and authors so you can go back into our archives and find your interests: http://webwhispers.org/news/WotWIndex.asp

WEBSITE

Website for 2015 brought in over 20,000 page views a month, and each month, we have new people finding us. Our Library and our Whispers on the Web are open to the general public.

CRUISES

On September 15th, 2015, we sailed for some of the best Fall scenery in the world! It was a great cruise, mostly in Canada. For information and pictures of other past cruises, please check out the index of cruises at http://webwhispers.org/activities/ww-cruises.asp

We are now making reservations for 2016. WebWhispers & Friends is sponsoring a 7 Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise on the magnificent of The Seas, sailing Oct. 2nd. For more information: http://webwhispers.org/activities/2016ECaribbean.asp

WW AT THE IAL

This year, the 2016 IAL- TLA MEETING AND VOICE INSTITUTE will be held in June in Dallas, TX.. We will have more details later in the Current Notices on the Website and will notify you through the Daily Whispers.  This year, we have been asked to be a part of the program for the entire group on WebWhispers history and activities.

ELECTIONS & OFFICERS
Report for our election in November is found on our website: http://webwhispers.org/about/Elections.asp

Re-elected for two year terms are:

President - Pat W Sanders
VP - Internet Activities - Jeff Vanden Hogen
VP Finance & Admin - Tom Whitworth

Just a reminder that all of our workers, writers, moderators, managers and officers are volunteers. We are always on the lookout in each of these departments for more volunteers so please let us know if you are ready, willing and available. If you can give only so much time, let us know and we will find something that only requires that amount. There is a much better life when working together with friends to help other friends.

Thank you for telling people about us, helping others through correspondence in our emails, library, WW forum, Facebook and the contributions toward our costs of operation.

Pat W Sanders, President

EMAIL DISTRIBUTION LISTS:
On our Regular list we have 229 active subscribers and 7 on the vacation list. Our Digest list consists of 1,695 active subscribers and 30 on the vacation List. Total count of subscribers on these lists which we often refer to as “The Daily Whispers” totals 1,967 unique email addresses. As usual the numbers would be considerably greater due to numerous shared email accounts. Our Daily Whispers digest list still arrives in subscribers mailboxes twice daily on a typical day, whenever there is activity to trigger its release. If there is no activity, then no email will be generated and/or distributed until activity is resumed.

Our announcement or “Notices List” currently has 945 subscribed enrolled in it. This list is for those who wish to be WebWhispers Members yet do not wish to actively participate on our Daily Whispers List. The “Notices List” sends subscribers an announcement once or twice a month.

During the period of time from July 1 through December 31, 2015, there were a total of 893 messages distributed on our “Daily Whispers” list which would average to be just under five messages a day.

PROJECTS:
The last six months went so fast it seems like yesterday I was writing the semi-annual report for the first half of 2015.

David Kinkead has been following and will start training as backup for the List Manager and he will be doing projects along with his moderator duties.

The IAL will be holding its Annual Meeting and Voice Institute in Dallas TX. June 23-26 2016 and shortly we will start getting thing in place for this. If you want to work with us there, we will be having a WW table and Dinner.

LIST MANAGERS:
Michael Csapo is doing the List Manager duties along with being backup for me. Scott Sysum VP-Member Services also takes care of the Data Base. Between Michael and Scott, they keep the List Management and the Data Base up to date. Thanks.
We also have Tom Olsavicky (Chief Moderator), David Kinkead (Moderator) and Pat Sanders (President) receiving List Manager Email and are following along.

MODERATORS:
We presently have nine moderators, who are receiving messages. I would like to thank Tom Olsavicky our Chief Moderator for his work in training new Moderators and setting up the monthly Moderating Schedules, and keeping our moderated List running smoothly.

All 9 moderators serve on the Moderator Advisory Committee. Any compliments, criticisms, suggestions or comments concerning the moderators may be addressed to moderator@webwhispers.org

I am proud and blessed to be able to serve as your VP Internet Activities for the last six months and looking forward to the next two years to be able to serve you.

Have a blessed 2016 and I hope to see you all at the IAL in Dallas TX. this June.
Sincerely,
Jeff Vanden Hogen – VP Internet Activities

BOD & List Manager July 1 – December 31 2015 – Michael Csapo

Wishing all readers a healthy and prosperous new year as we get underway for 2016. Hard to believe how time slips away as we age and I feel blessed to still be alive and experiencing new things all the time.

There are no significant changes for myself to report as list manager for this particular time period, it was and is, pretty much business as usual. It seems this time of year always experiences a spike in new member enrollments, likely due to many folks acquiring new computers/electronic devices during the holidays. At least that's what our founder "Dutch" usually accredited this seasonal spike to. It makes sense to me as it does appear to be an annual phenomenon.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members with hopes they will find our website and membership privileges as beneficial as I did when I first became a laryngectomy and a member just over 15 years ago.

If I/we can ever assist you with concerns over navigating our site or other membership related matters, simply send an email to:

listmgr@webwhispers.org

Sincerely,

~Michael Csapo

BOD & WW Advisor - July 1 – December 31, 2015 - Terry Duga

There is not much to report from where I am. I still enjoy reading the daily posts and think how proud Dutch would be seeing how his mail list has expanded and succeeded in giving support worldwide to throat and neck cancer victims and to their caregivers.

WW has grown exponentially, and remains vibrant thanks to its members and to those hard working volunteers who do the footwork to keep the organization up and running smoothly.

Also, do not forget the support we get from suppliers.

I am looking forward to the next IAL meeting and the WW banquet and seeing attending members in real life once again.

A great 2016 to everyone.

Terry Duga

Semiannual Officers' Report to the Membership

President's Report: January 1 - June 30, 2015 - Pat W Sanders

WHISPERS ON THE WEB

We seem to have entered an era of a more stable period of publishing. Donna McGary and Jack Henslee are Editors of Whispers on the Web, I am still the Managing Editor and work with Stacy, our web gal, to get the publishing done. Kim Almand is coordinator of the monthly professional column, VoicePoints. Other monthly contributors, Len Lyons, the British poet, and a new writer from Ireland, Noirin Sheahan, a great addition. Frank Klett keeps us up to date on computer matters and also spends time in the WW Forum to answer questions about computers.. We have a couple others who write for us occasionally and we welcome new contributors. We publish the newsletter, the first of every month.

My book, "I left My Voice on the Dining Room Table” has been published a year but I have been so busy with WebWhispers, I don’t have time to spend elsewhere on promoting it. It has much about the founding of WebWhispers along with the story of what it is like to be a new laryngectomee. I relied on many medical and patient contributors who gave excellent advice. Click on http://talkingthroatcancer.com to see a list of the places it may be purchased.

WEBMASTER

For the first 6 months of the year, our website had 149,925 page views, with the most used pages and numbers visited:

Hypothyroidism - 11,440 viewers- Top page for visitors in this 6 months.
Number 2 to 5 with about 6,000 each - Suppliers - TEP prosthesis - Text to Speech - Neck and Shoulder Disfunction - Electrolarynx
Interesting that 3 of the top 6 sites are from Talking Again

Stoma Covers and patterns is still a very popular part of our site.

Totals for the Whispers on the Web views for the 6 month period are about 25,000.

DATABASE

The database has been assigned to our new VP Member Services, Scott Sysum, and he is well started with getting each new member set up with records in the files. Gradually, working with all other List Managers, we need to get all changes and additions turned over to Scott. He is a whiz at this.

We are fast approaching 3400 registered members but not all are active and we need to find out which ones might need to be removed from our members lists.

CRUISE

http://webwhispers.org/activities/ww-cruises.asp is the index of all past cruises. We have a 10 day Canadian cruise coming up on September 15th this year and are trying to decide what to set up for next year. Am checking on choices that might be of interest and would like to hear from you on cruises or other type tours as a vacation we might offer as a group. I have a great deal of interest in the Riverboat Cruises but pricing is usually higher. Your Ideas will be appreciated.

ELECTIONS & OFFICERS

The election will be coming up in November and notices will be on the list regarding any offices open. At this time, there is no reason to believe any of our offices will not have the current officer running for re-election. However if anyone wants to work in a certain section, please let us know.

WW AT THE IAL

This year, 2015, the IAL ANNUAL MEETING AND VOICE INSTITUTE was held in June in Baltimore, MD. The reception for the WW Dinner hosted by Richard Najarian of Bruce Med was wonderful, as always, and our dinner attendance was 105 We had five members who were our speakers for short talks and thoughts on their years with WebWhispers. It was much enjoyed and the comments later from the attendees were wonderful.

Our WW Table was well placed right across from the IAL registration with a lot of space so we could have a number of visits going on all at once. Nice area, and we had some lovely items we gave as Thank You gifts for donations. New are travel cups with WW logo. Jeff got those!

All volunteers worked a long schedule as well as taking breaks to go to the VI and be examples for the teaching staff to use. It was fun. Donna McGary was there this year. A pleasure to have her back and so many people know her through the newsletters that many were excited to meet her. We got to know Tom Whitworth, now our VP Finance and Admin, a great addition to WW. Jeff Vanden Hogen, now VP Internet Activities, hauled a lot of items for our table an Jim Lauder brought some for us.  Jeff and I had done most of the planning and scheduling and he had a surprise. He had made a pipe rack holder for our big WebWhispers Banner and it looked wonderful there in front of the tables.  I found some good looking plaques for our awards and we gave out 25 engraved ones to people who have worked with us through the years prior to this one, some with special projects one time and others with every year help in one department or another.  You can't compare what they did because it was so different.

Phyllis McMullen, one of our delegates, and husband, Richard have helped us before and had volunteered again this year. They were a huge help and we thank them for being there.

I love al these folks and it is so wonderful to get to spend this time with them when they are able to make it to the IAL. They are all wonderful hard working people, and I can't describe what a pleasure it is to have them in my life. Met a lot of new people including a number of new WW members. Always fun!

I got to visit a good bit with both InHealth and Atos personnel, many of whom were fairly new to the companies. Most of the other vendors were old friends and it was a pleasure to see them and catch up.

We attended the delegates meeting Saturday morning and the official announcement was made that the TX Laryngectomee Association will work with the IAL to host the IAL AM and VI next year in late June in Dallas, TX.  A major announcement was that Jody Knott of M D Anderson and long time WebWhispers member (also formerly our VoicePoints coordinator), would not be returning next year as Director of the Voice Institute.  We willl miss her as she did an excellent job. However, I did use that opportunity to ask if she would like to be our WebWhispers Library Advisor.  I quietly put that on our Library Intro page.  Kim Almond has been our Coordinator for the professionals writing for Voice Points for two years and we have discussed getting some more professional information added to the Library so perhaps with the two of them, we will have a chance to do that.

We have lost a number of valuable volunteers in the last year or so, and even though we still hurt from that, we have found some other members who are willing to use their time to help us all.   We welcome their help.

Pat W Sanders, President

I would like to thank Pat and Michael who are always there when I get need something, I couldn’t ask for better teachers and friends.

I would like to thank Michael Csapo for taking over the List Manager duties, Michael is doing the New Member applications and helping were he can. Sincerely,

Jeff Vanden Hogen – VP Internet Activities

BOD & List Manager: January 1 - June 30, 2015 - Michael Csapo

Plans do not always work out as we wish or hope and it was with deep regret that I informed the governing body of WebWhispers, that I would be unable to take on the position of VP Member Services which had been previously offered and at one point accepted and agreed upon.

A recent relocation demanded much more of my personal time for home projects, improvements, maintenance, repairs and general upkeep which was not a concern in all my years of apartment living. A mutual agreement was reached where I would remain on with WebWhispers as a BOD member and resume one of my former positions as list manager and as a backup and advisor where needed in those areas where I have been blessed with experience. I work pretty much behind the scenes now but am pleased to help our organization, as much as I am able, while enjoying flying just a little lower on the radar screen.

Our membership grows weekly and our VP Internet Activities Jeff will elaborate on those numbers. Until next time, remain healthy, happy and blessed!

~Michael Csapo

The WW Facebook open page created by Jim Lauder on our behalf, continues to attract new members to WW and to the WW Facebook Group. Since so many WW members spend so much time there, we have been thanked often for expanding our outreach to Facebook. Membership in our Group has exceeded our expectations. This was the right move at the right time.

To join the WW Facebook Group, go to the Facebook page of any of our four administrators, Shmuel Mitchell (that’s me), Marlene Haynes Grayson, Logan Grayson or William Cross and ask us to “friend” you. As soon as we “friend” you, you will become a member of the group. To get the right William Cross, type in william.cross.752

Many new laryngectomees start posting in the Forum as soon as they join us. . They are familiar with message boards, like the casual feel of the Forum, and know that asking questions in the Forum gets a much faster response. Recent threads with their questions have brought great responses and great advice from our veteran larys.

The WW Forum is also our socializing area. It is our informal clubhouse where you can sit back, kick off your shoes, and get to know everyone in a leisurely manner as you make new friends and renew old friendships in a relaxed, friendly setting. Addition to above report:

Because of changes in officers, needing new signatures to the bank accounts, and the setting up of new books, we postponed any change in the DH Emergency Fund until after our new accountant had the Quick Books in place and books balanced for the first 6 months of 2015.

We will now proceed with the policy statement of transferring sums from the available sums to the special use Emergency Account which is to keep our site and group helping to advise all laryngectomees according to our purpose named in our bylaws.  We have requested that Tom Whitworth subtract $10,000 from available funds and add the same to special use funds.

Grand totals are the same and the funds remain in the Wells-Fargo Savings account.
